The oldest modern prison complex in Malaysia, Taiping Prison, is a medium-security built in 1879.

At its prime, it was the largest prison complex, and in the early 1880s, Sikh warders were brought in to assist the Malaysian warders, while Hong Kong vocational trainers were later brought in to introduce useful industries such as printing, cloth products, sewing, rattan weaving, and iron work to prison inmates.

The prison, located right in the middle of Taping, is still in operation to this day.
