Taiping Clock Tower

A famous tourist hot spot, the main must-see clock tower was built in 1881 with timber and later rebuilt in brick in 1890.

Towering over Taiping’s historic heart, the Clock Tower isn’t just a timekeeper, it’s a silent storyteller. Its journey began in 1881, as a humble wooden fort, and later, the first police station in the fledgling town. Back then, it stood in the Chinese theatre and market, a silent guardian in the town square. Locals call it: “The Fort”.

In 1950, the police moved on, leaving the fort behind. Demolition loomed, threatening to erase its memory. Thankfully, good sense prevailed, and the tower found a new purpose. Though parts were lost, the core remained, and in recent years, meticulous hands have breathed new life into its ageing frame. In 2018, the clock’s chime, silent for a decade, filled the air once more, a joyous melody of resilience.

Today, the Clock Tower whispers its tales to tourists and locals alike. Don’t miss the charming red phone booth, a lone survivor whispering of bygone days. While the Tourist Information Center rests for now, the tower’s exterior, a canvas of history and architecture, awaits your camera.

Come, stand beneath its gaze, feel the weight of time, and let the whispers of the past resonate through you. The Taiping Clock Tower, more than just a landmark, is a testament to the enduring spirit, a must-visit for anyone who loves history, architecture, and the magic of a timeless tale.

Bonus: For a truly immersive experience, grab a bite at one of the nearby restaurants, then take a stroll through the enchanting Taiping Lake Gardens, just a 10-minute walk away. Let the magic of Taiping unfold, one step at a time.
