Derived from the Arabic word that means “knowledge,” Muallim is a newly created district that focuses on education, especially in relation to the era leading to Malaysia’s independence.
The Sultan Idris University of Education, which was founded in 1919, is located in the district.
Furthermore, the district is graced by the local establishment known as Sarang Art Hub, which functions as a restaurant and gallery filled with props used in films directed by one of Malaysia’s most beloved film directors, the late Mamat Khalid (real name: Mohamad bin Mohammad Khalid), who was born in Perak and is the younger brother of Malaysia’s prolific and celebrated cartoonist, Datuk Lat (Mohammad Nor bin Mohammad Khalid).
