The word orangutan comes from the Malay word “orang hutan”, meaning “man of the forest”.
The number of orangutans in the wild now is dwindling rapidly.
Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation (BMOUIF) was established in 2000 initially as an ex-situ conservation facility for the endangered Bornean Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus).
Today, it has become one of the world’s unique eco-tourism destinations.
The Orang Utan Island is a research institution and sanctuary dedicated to the preservation and research of the orangutans, resembling the orangutan’s natural habitat as close as possible.
The vegetation is similar to the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo.
Ensconced within the Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, a three-acre eco-park where visitors can closely interact with animals such as deer and reptiles, the island has an 11-acre water park as well.
So, why not visit these lovely creatures during your next holiday?
Hang around and interact with them, join the crew during feeding sessions and discover what makes them so unique, including the similarities that the orangutans share with humans!
