Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve

If nature is your thing, why not visit the world’s best-managed and sustainable mangrove ecosystem and spread green energy around?

Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve

Covering an area of more than 40,000 hectares, the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve is an eco-education centre.

In this park, wooden boardwalks help you to get up close and personal with the exotic mangrove ecology.

It is a haven for migratory birds, making the site a must-see for birding and photography enthusiasts.

After you’re done with the forest reserve, how about gaining new knowledge by joining a tour at the Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factory, where you will learn and witness the old-fashioned way of making charcoal by baking local mangrove logs in kilns?

If you still weren’t able to move on from birdwatching, head to Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary to watch them to your heart’s content and finish the day over a piping hot bowl of local prawn noodles! Planning on spending the night?

Then enjoy the moment here by watching the fireflies at Jeti Kelip-Kelip, Kampung Dew.

Good evening, I’m Ms Jennifer, from Imperial International School, Ipoh. On 11 December 2024 (Wednesday), we will be having the School Excursion. Can we visit the mangrove forest on that day?

Hello Ms Jennifer. Sorry for the delayed response. We suggest contacting Mr Khairul, Nature Guide at Kuala Sepetang Eco Trading. He is contactable at 0125145023.

Terima kasih atas cadangan pihak tuan/puan. Pihak kami ambil maklum dan perbaiki.

Thank you for pointing out, Mr Lim. We have updated the link accordingly. We appreciate your kind assistance in spotting the error.

Good morning, sir
Thank you very much for highlighting Matang Mangroves as one of the destination for tourist during Visit Perak Year !!
When we talk about Matang Mangroves– the first thing that strikes the tourist’s mind is Kuala Sepetang & Kuala Gula.

However , Pls be informed of the real situation in these two places.
1) The kuala sepetang famous boardwalk under Jab Perhutanan is closed !!!
The beautiful A- frame chalets and the circular hostel too all closed for public since two years ago !!. — all run down and not safe for public — reply from Jab Hutan Taiping !!

Kuala Gula is the most famous place in Malaysia for migratory birds coming from as far as cold Russia, N. Korea, Siberia etc. but SAD to say that the famous PERHILITAN’s center here is completely run down. I used to bring many bus load of tourist from klang valley to Kuala Gula few yrs ago & the PERLIHITAN Center was the main attraction.
In this center, all tourist used to enjoy the video show on migratory birds, but now there is no chairs to sit in the dewan to watch the show !!. Most of the exhibits in here have degraded because of roof leak ( my last visit here I saw they have done the roof ) but exhibit still pending !!

The Kuala Gula beautiful resort built standing on the river under Majlis Daerah Krian which can accommodate 100s of visitors is now completely close down. This resort had hostels for students, a big air-con hall, lovely cafeteria but all closed !!
What activities now available in Matang Mangroves for tourist is by the private sector ( all by Chinese)
Most of the local tourist are Malays & I don’t think they are brave enough to stay in Chinese homestay, Chinese guides with language problem !!.
Having pin pointed all these short coming here, I believe that it’s still not too late to rectify these places in time . It’s only a matter of having a brain stoming friendly
meeting with PERLIHITAN & Jab Perhutanan to come to a win win situation!!
I am sure these short coming can be overcome in time with proper control funding sir !!
I sincerely believe that Tourism Malaysia can play ur part to put back Matang Mangroves as a true nature based destination for Perak Tourism!!
Many thanks in advance sir.

Dear Mr. Lasal,

We appreciate your valuable feedback and suggestions. We will make sure to share this information with the relevant authorities. Please note that we are a state tourism board, and not a tourism body under federal government.
